Barn.

The barn pad concrete pouring was held up last Friday due to rain. We were hoping to pour at 7am just before the rain hit at 10am, but we woke up Friday morning to a drizzling rain, so the pour had to be held off.

I was surprised to see the crew out here early Monday morning with concrete trucks arriving in quick succession. Before I was even having my first cup of coffee, the pad had been poured. As you can see below, the framing took off quickly beginning on Wednesday. It's amazing just how fast we went from nothing to a recognizable building being back there in the woods.

This all happened in one weeks time from Friday to Friday...

You can see the trusses laid out on the top of the building that will eventually make a second story, or an attic. But it will be a huge attic. That's one of the main differences between the metal barn we started with and this current wood barn. The metal barn would have been just one story with a large, open ceiling on the inside. This new barn allows us to utilize that otherwise wasted upstairs space.

Our builder found these floor trusses at a great price. They had been built for an apartment building to span a 30 foot space, so they are built extra strong to hold what would have been second story apartments. The apartment builders cancelled the order, so we changed our plans a bit to fit the 30 foot span and there you have it...we now have a huge attic space for storage. You can look at these pictures and imagine just how big the barn will be once the second story is framed. We'll probably put in some hay loft doors like you see on older barns so we can easily access the attic from the outside (we'll also have stairs inside).

Did the boys get to put their foot or hand in the wet concrete? And then write their name and year with a nail? I remember doing that when I was a kid...and they are still at my parents house!

Kari, we are planning on letting them do the handprint and date thing when we pour the driveway for the barn.
